THE STORY ABOUT START GNIEZNO

The beginnings of Gniezno speedway date on the late 40s', but it was not before 1956 that the speedway section by The Sport Association START Gniezno was notified for the league matches. The first speedway club was set up four years earlier. The best known rider of those times was Henryk Cieślewicz. It was him that together with Czesław Odrzywolski, Bolesław Ciesielski, Stanisław Gierdal, Kazimierz Krupa, Juliusz Ptaszyński, Eugeniusz Wróżyński, Bogdan Wróblewski, Andrzej Pogorzelski i Teodor Pogorzelski were the hard core of the START Gniezno team in the league matches in the fifties. A special event in the history of the club was the first promotion of the team from Lech City to the first league ranks in 1958. The debut among the best teams in the country was successful, and Start team in the final classification took the fifth place (there were eight teams present in the first league). A year later, however, Gniezno team dropped to the second league. The team was out of luck that was caused by a tragic death of obtained a year earlier Witold Świątkowski and the injuries of leading riders. Staring from 1961 for the next 19 years Start took part in the matches of the second league, fighting not only with the rivals but also with financial problems. In the beginning of 70s' a group of young, talented riders, who could effectively rival with the old riders for the place in the team, appeared in Start Gniezno. The group consisted of Eugeniusz Błaszak, Leon Kujawski i Marcin Rożak. Moreover, brothers Wojciech and Jan Puk from Stal Gorzów and Wojciech Kaczmarek from Unia Leszno strengthened the team. Unfortunately, in 1977 a tragic event shocked the Gniezno club. During the finals of Silver Helmet in Tarnów Marcin Rożak, a young and talented rider was badly and consequently lethally injured. 1979 was a break-through year for Start. The hopes of Start funs connected with the coach Andrzej Pogorzelski came through and the team, from the first place, was promoted to the highest class. Moreover, two juniors won a bronze medal in the finals of MPPK. The next season started without any personal changes and the team was the biggest revelation of the games taking the third place in the final classification. This brown medal of DMP is the best result of Gniezno team and it was achieved in particular by: E. Błaszak, L. Kujawski, W. Kaczmarek, K. Wójcik, S. Gała, R. Łoś and others. The riders were also successful in the finals of MDMP and MPPK in which the red-blacks won the brown medal. The next seasons were not that successful and in 1984 Start left the first league. This was caused by weakening of Gniezno team (W. Kaczmark ended his career and E. Błaszak left the club), whereas the new-obtained riders (H. Olszak i M. Kępa) were not effective enough. Despite these problems, in 1984 Wojciech Pankowski came as surprise when he won a silver medal in MIMP. The team stayed on the second league front until 1986 when with the coach Marian Kwarciński it entered again the first league doors. The year 1987 brings another tragic death; during the four-match championship G. Smoliński was badly injured and shortly after that he died. Start ended the games with dropping to the second league. The positive accent, however, was the brown medal won in MMPK by J. Gomólski, K. Wankowski and the reserve rider T. Fajfer, who a year later became a runner-up in MIMP finals. After this season Gniezno team disintegrates; the riders end the career or leave to another clubs. The years 88-94 did not bring any league successes, but the juniors did not fail - T. Fajfer, Sz. Kulczak and the reserve P. Maciejewski won the silver medal in MMPPK. The next break-through for Strat comes in 1995, when Gniezno team comes back to the first league. The biggest contribution in the success of the team coached by Zbigniew Jąder was made by Tony Kasper, Jacek Gomólski and Fajfer brothers. Before '96 season Robert Sawina entered the team and became its leader. However, J. Gomólski left to Bydgoszcz. In the years 96-99 the majority of successes were achieved outsider league championships. In the MPPK'96 finals two riders won silver medal, and in 1998 Krzysztof Jabłoński is the runner-up in the junior world championship. In the same year Start juniors became gold medalist of MDMP, silver medalist of MMPPK, and the seniors took the third position in MPPK. In spite of those achievements, a year later, Gniezno team dropped to a new-created first league. In the last year of starts among the best teams in the country the juniors again brought medals for the Gniezno club winning brown in MMPPK. It is worth mentioning, that in 2002 season Krzysztof Cegielski, representing Start Gniezno, becomes a runner-up in IMP. It was the first medal for Gniezno rider in those prestige championships. During that season the team in the last league matches lost the game for the promotion with ZKŻ Zielona Góra, and later with Wybrzeże Gdańsk. The worst days in the history of Gniezno speedway came in 2004. The team won only one match, and it was troubled with financial and staff problems. In spite of these the season ended with Gniezno team leasing the first league. It was the last year of the club activity under the patronage of Spółdzielczy Klub Sportowy "START" Gniezno. The activists decided to suspend the activity and set up a new club, "START" Gniezno Speedway Association that became a heir and continuator of Gniezno speedway history. Already the first season for the new club brought happy days for its funs. TŻ Start did not loose a single match in the competitions defeating all rivals in the majority of matches. The team basing on Polish riders coached by Grzegorz Śniegowski in spectacular manner achieved promotion to the first league. The hopes of red-black funs started to revive. Before 2006 the team was strengthened, and the coach was changed to Lech Kędziora, one of the most experienced coaches in Poland. The team, underestimated by rivals, was the revelation of the games. The club riders: Dawid Cieślewicz, Mirosław Jabłoński and Adrian Gomólski supported by foreign ones: Jesper Jansen and Magnus Zetterstrom surprisingly took high, third place in the final classification. The success of the team slowly started to attract interest in speedway among funs and sponsors. Before 2007 season Gniezno team was reconstructed again. A few basic riders were changed. Tomasz Rempała, Stanisław Burza, Simon Stead, Kaj Laukkanen and David Howe entered the team. The coach was also changed to titled Jan Krzystyniak. The hopes of speedway fans grow. Today the organisational and financial situation of Gniezno Speedway Association is stable, which should be reflected in the sport achievements of the team.
